7 Signs That Your Exterior Paint Needs An Update

9/14/2017

As the weather outside begins getting cooler, it's time to take a look at some of the renovation projects for your home that need to be done before the temperature drops too low. One of these projects that can be taken care of for you by the best renovation company in Missouri is a new coat of exterior paint.

For exterior paint to dry properly, it needs to be done before the temperature gets too low for the paint being used. Some are made for colder temperatures than others, but if you can get the painting done before it remains below 45-50 degrees, this is best. Midwest Renovation has a few signs that you can look for that mean your home needs new exterior paint.

Peeling Paint
Even if the wood underneath is not yet exposed, peeling paint is a sure sign that it's time to repaint. If you notice flaking, bubbling, or cracking of the exterior paint, this could signal that the wood underneath is rotting and will need to be replaced.

Bare Wood

If the paint has come completely off of the wood, that wood is no longer protected from the elements. It won't take long for it to begin rotting without a fresh coat of paint.

Strange Texture
When paint that should be smooth has a texture to it, this could mean that moisture has penetrated it. A new paint job will reseal the wood before it has the chance to rot.

Fading or Discoloration
Good quality paint only begins fading when it is beginning to fail. Dark hues do tend to fade faster than paler shades, but once you notice the original color lightening, especially on shaded areas, it's time for a new coat.

Cracks in Stucco
Another sign of paint failing is the appearance of cracks in stucco, especially around the foundation and windows.

Chalking
After a while, paint may take on a chalky look, or even come off like chalk dust when you run your hand over it. This means the paint is old and needs to be replaced.

Boredom
If you are tired of the look of the outside of your home, an updated paint color may be just the thing you need to boost its curb appeal. It's also an excellent way to increase the value if you are thinking about selling in the near future.

It is recommended that most homes be repainted every 7-10 years, but the amount of time really depends on the material that is being used and the region that you live in. Regular cleaning, upkeep, and painting of your house's exterior will cut down greatly on the amount of prep work involved when you do repaint. Less prep work means lower costs when you have the work done.
